Why not try a Blog? Our Jungle House

Many of our friends and family know how much Kirby and I have come to love the little town of Gamboa, Panama, and have shared our excitement about this trip. Many have asked us to share pictures and updates. There is much to share. In fact, so much I could easily overshare and drive people crazy. So instead of posting everything to other social media where posts show up wether people are interested or not, we’ll try blogging. This way those who are interested can check it out and we’ll leave everyone else alone. Hang in there with me as I have no idea what I’m doing! … but that’s never stopped me before! 😊

So here we are - on the back deck of the house we have rented for the month of December.

This is our 4th trip to Gamboa, each time walking around town and wondering about the houses. You see, Gamboa sits right along the canal and was built by Americans to be a dredging community shortly after the canal opened in 1914. The houses are built with similar structure and having always wondered what the interior was like, we are excited to be living in one for the month.

Gamboa is not a fancy town.  It is a community of real people working and living in an AMAZING setting.  These houses have been here since the early 1900’s and require constant upkeep to battle the moisture, sun and termites.  The owner of the house we are in has not been diligent in upkeep and let’s just say his standard of clean leaves a lot to be desired.  The afternoon we arrived was one of scrubbing, sweeping and laundry but now we are comfortable in “our jungle home.” Fancy it’s not - but it allows us to spend days and nights in this incredible place and a chance to dream of what a house like this could be.

There are four bedrooms in this house. The one pictured is where we have chosen to sleep. The windows consist of screens with louvered glass panels that open and close, however I can’t imagine ever closing them. It’s like sleeping in a tree house. We wake to the chirping of birds and insects and the first glimpse of the day is the canopy of trees outside. Extremely modest accommodations but in this place Nature is the star.

Thanks for hanging in there with me in this first post. That’s all for now as Kirby and I just made our first ever dash for the ice cream truck - Gamboa style!!!
