Sloths, Toucans and Frogs - Oh My!
Sloths, Toucans and Frogs - Oh My!
It’s been WILD today! We took our coffee on the go early this morning in search of toucans - and we found some! My apologies for the poor quality of this next photo. Unfortunately you’ll have to take my word for it - there are 4 toucans in this tree. They aren’t the kind with the brilliant green beaks - we’re still on the hunt for those - but these were fun to see too. The next time we come to Panama we’re bringing insulated cups - cold drinks are cool for about 5 min and the condensation puddle the glass sits in is more of a lake - and a better camera. The explanation for the better camera lies in the next photo.
Later, over French toast on the back deck, we noticed a neighbor feeding monkeys with a very long stick - more research will certainly be done on this - and were entertained by iguanas chasing each other down a tree. It felt like monkeys followed us on the path to the sloth sanctuary - one with a baby on her back. A better camera is needed to capture the monkeys as well but I’ll keep trying in the meantime.
And then there were SLOTHS! Snoozing sloths who could sometimes be coaxed awake with the temptation of a lovely and delicious hibiscus flower. Feel free to ooh and awe with this video. I don’t know how anyone could help it!
We also learned about a few of the frogs in the area. Pictured below are two of the 229 species in Panama - both are poisonous and about the size of a nickel. Can you guess why the red one is nick named a blue Jean frog? Those skinny little legs resemble some of the old rockers we’ve seen at concerts lately - only the rockers sport leather 😊
Most evenings Kirby and I take what KP refers to as a flippy walk. We don’t put on shoes but wander around town in our flip-flops, usually while enjoying a beer. These walks have been loaded with unsolved mysteries; Was that noise from man or beast? What was this building used for? and the question that has finally been answered - Is that noise from a kid playing a video game or do people use electronic devices to keep a certain critters out of their houses, or WHAT IN THE WORLD COULD THAT BE???
I’ll leave a little white space after the following video so you can take a listen and make a guess. Then scroll down to see if you guessed right.

Did you guess a Tungara Frog?
This crazy frog is about the size of a half dollar, easily disguises itself as a leaf and puts on that performance to attract mates. I guess they also have built in floaties. They blow air into their bottom lip to form a big bubble that allows them to float on the river.
And this episode of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Adventure isn’t over yet! The 2 iguanas that were chasing each other are back. We aren’t sure if it’s 2 buddies playing tag or an afternoon of romance about to unfold. 😳 More on this another time.
For those family and friends still drifted in, we hope this bit of sloth therapy made your day a little better. Hang in there!
