 New Adventures with Old Friends



To be clear - the friends aren’t old but the friendship is established - lucky for us!  We had a Great time with Mike and Lisa! Mike is an avid hunter and fisherman.  He was sure we would enjoy fishing and he was right! I get a kick out of seeing our faces while we posed with the first few catches of the day:

Mike caught the doozie of the day and I’m not sure which is more entertaining - watching Mike catch the fish or hearing the cheer section in the boat!



Not only did our friends share the joy of fishing but by watching the pros in action, we learned how to batter up and fry a little fresh fish! Not too bad for Gringos from land-locked Colorado!


Lisa was less than impressed with the traffic on the way to Costco Vieja - Old Panama City - where we enjoyed a little shopping, watched some local artisans and added photos to our collection:




A trip to Tobogá Island made for an interesting day:






We couldn’t begin to count the number of times we have mentioned how we wished we had known about a trail, restaurant, beach, etc when Mike and Lisa were here to enjoy it too! Maybe another trip to Panama is in their future?!?

With an itch for the ocean and the desire to explore new territory, we set off for two nights at the Sister Moon Resort located on Isla Grande - in the Caribbean Sea off the Northern shore of Panama.  We were hoping to pamper ourselves a little, resort style, before returning to the US. That isn’t exactly how things turned out. I’m relieved to say that we did NOT have to stay in the deluxe houseboat that floated in the bay (pictured above). There is always a silver lining. :-) That being said, to call Sister Moon a resort might be pushing it. Bravo! What a show!

The day was off to a cool-ish, overcast start which may have allowed for the morning spectacle that we enjoyed this day. While having morning coffee on the veranda, we were first joined by one silent toucan briefly landing in the tree overhead before continuing on to the forest in the Northwest.  Next, two giant black, red-headed (I’ll just say it - very ugly) vultures rested in the same tree while about 6 hummingbirds zipped and zoomed around the garden.  Sometimes two of them would dance or wrestle - I’m not sure which - in a kind of free fall, separating moments before reaching the ground. I finally gave up trying to catch them in a photo and just enjoyed their antics while thinking of my friend Carrie, who LOVES hummingbirds.  Over the next hour or so, birds of all colors and sizes flittered by. The Monkeys Don’t Care

  I’m not going to lie - I’m a little proud of this photo. I really did take it, as well as the photos below. The zoom on my new camera works well as these howler monkeys were a fair distance away. The wind helped by opening brief windows through the swaying tree leaves, giving me the opportunity to snap a shot. If I can do it again remains to be seen! :-) Yesterday we were reflecting on how different the Panama we flew into on Nov. 24th is from the one we visited last year. Kirby and I heard about the protests happening in this country and before boarding the plane contacted Ivan to see what was what. He informed us that there were issues in the cities but nothing around Gamboa and what he said proved to be true. However, the trickle down effect did reach the little community we love. Driving from the airport to Gamboa, we noticed Panamanian flags of all sizes attached to passing cars and flying everywhere.
